While sipping on a cup of coffee this morning, you realized that one of your teeth felt really sensitive to the change in temperature. This issue seemed to pop up out of nowhere, and you aren’t sure what could be causing it. Unfortunately, this may be a sign that you have a cavity and will need to have it filled. Read on to learn about five common signs that you need a dental filling to repair a damaged tooth.

Signs You May Need a Dental Filling

There are several signs that you may need to get a dental filling, including increased sensitivity when eating or drinking hot or cold things. A few other common signs that it’s time to visit your dentist to have a filling placed include:

  • Tears in your floss – This may be a sign that a tooth is jagged due to decay.
  • A chipped or fractured tooth – This will likely need to be repaired with a dental filling as soon as possible to prevent decay from developing.
  • Pain when you chew – Sensitivity or pain when chewing may be a sign of a decayed tooth.
  • Dark spots on your tooth – If you see a dark spot on your tooth, this may be a cavity.

What to Do If You Think You Need a Filling

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, call your dentist to schedule an appointment. Explain your concerns to them over the phone so they can determine what the issue is and if it requires a dental filling. Until your dentist is able to see you, continue to practice good oral hygiene. This means brushing your teeth twice and flossing once daily to remove bacteria, plaque, and food particles from your smile.

You should also avoid sweet and acidic foods and drinks, such as soda, lemonade cookies, and candy. These may make the issue worse, leading to additional discomfort and a higher treatment price. Additionally, don’t smoke cigarettes, bite your nails, or use your teeth to open bottles or packages as doing these things may lead to additional dental damage.

Having a painful or sensitive tooth can be alarming and uncomfortable. If this ever happens to you, make sure to stay calm and contact your dentist. They will be able to help you schedule an appointment to come in and see them so they can determine the cause of your discomfort and help get your smile back on track!
