There is no immortal solvent that you can drop them in for eternal denture life. But, as they say, cleanliness is next to godliness. By properly maintaining your dentures, you can get the most out of your smile, avoid frequent replacements, dodge gum disease, and overall enjoy a more convenient life.

It might sound like beginner stuff, but if you don’t know your basics, you’ll find yourself in hot water later. Luckily, class is in session. Keep reading for some denture maintenance tips.

Lesson #1: Cleaning is Caring for Your Dentures

Just because your dentures are false teeth doesn’t mean they don’t collect harmful bacteria. And even if you’re missing all of your teeth, gum disease can still infect your gums and cause major problems. Clean your dentures before putting them on and after taking them off. Don’t forget to scrub underneath them, don’t forget to floss, and remember to soak them in their special sanitizing solution at night.

Stick to this routine religiously, and your dentures (and oral health) will stay in good shape for much, much longer.

Lesson #2: Your Dentures Are Not Invincible

Your dentures are made out of durable materials, but they can still break. If you bend them, you could throw the fit out of alignment or snap them in half. If you drop them, they could chip or fracture. Be careful, even as you’re cleaning them. For more butterfingered students, lay out a soft towel or fill your sink with water. This will help minimize impact in the event you accidentally lose your grip.

Lesson #3: Leave Denture Repair to The Professionals

Accidents happen. That’s fine. What’s not so great is attempting to fix your dentures yourself if they do get damaged. For one thing, what are you going to fix them with? Using non-specialized adhesives could harm your gums. For another thing, you could cause more damage. At the end of the day, it’s better and safer to take broken dentures in to be repaired by your dentist.

Lesson #4: Always Listen to Your Dentist

Did your dentist give you specific cleaning instructions? Did they tell you to visit biannually for checkups and cleanings? Do that! Your dentist isn’t just a good teacher. They’re an experienced professional. When it comes to ensuring your dentures’ longevity, no one’s going to know more.

Your dentist will be happy to help you out, too. Maybe you forgot something they said, or maybe you want more maintenance tips. Either way, there’s no such thing as a stupid question. On that note, class is dismissed!

About the Practice

Our team at Beacon Dentistry of Weatherford prioritizes patient care.
